L’Îlet des Lataniers is one of the most wild and unspoiled hamlets in the Cirque de Mafate, located at about 620 meters above sea level, on the far northern edge of the Orangers ridge. Set on a suspended plateau overlooking the Rivière des Galets, this îlet offers a complete immersion in raw and spectacular nature.
Accessible only on foot, particularly via the Canalisation des Orangers, Îlet des Lataniers is a must for hikers seeking breathtaking landscapes and authentic routes. The trail leading there is known for being exposed, with numerous viewpoints overlooking Mafate’s cliffs and deep ravines.

In 1752, the famous slave hunter François Mussard captured the maroon leader Samson here, an iconic figure of resistance in the mountains of Mafate. Despite its isolation, Îlet des Lataniers has seen significant developments to improve living conditions. Since 1986, a water catchment system has enabled irrigation of the plateau, supporting local agriculture.
