Îlet à Malheur is an îlet in the Cirque de Mafate, located at approximately 870 meters above sea level. Behind this striking name lies a powerful history, connected to the marronage in Réunion and the conflicts that marked the island’s highlands.

The name dates back to 1829, during a tragic confrontation. Detachments led by M. Guichard reportedly exterminated around forty fugitive slaves settled in this remote area of the cirque. This event left a deep mark on the place and explains the name “Îlet à Malheur”, which remains charged with memory to this day.

Despite this dark history, the îlet is now a peaceful living area, characteristic of the Cirque de Mafate. The inhabitants maintain a simple lifestyle based on agriculture, livestock, and a degree of self-sufficiency, all within a preserved natural environment.

Îlet à Malheur is set in a typical natural landscape of the cirque’s intermediate zones. Surrounded by steep terrain, deep ravines, and lush vegetation, it offers a total immersion in the wild nature of Réunion. The scenery is varied and changes with the seasons, providing visitors with unique panoramas.

Access to the îlet is strictly on foot, like all the îlets in Mafate. It can be reached via the Sentier Scout, a trail popular with hikers for its technical passages and impressive views of the cirque. This access makes Îlet à Malheur an appealing destination for hiking and adventure enthusiasts.

Its location also allows easy connections to other parts of the cirque, including Aurère, Îlet à Bourse, and areas near Deux Bras. These connections make it an interesting waypoint for hiking routes across Mafate.

From Îlet à Malheur, several routes lead to other sectors of the cirque:

The Cirque de Mafate, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, remains a unique territory where humans live in harmony with their environment. Îlet à Malheur perfectly illustrates this balance, blending historical memory with a contemporary life focused on simplicity and nature.

In summary, Îlet à Malheur is a place rich in history, offering an experience that is both emotional and natural. Between marronage heritage, hiking trails, and a preserved environment, it is a distinctive stop to explore the Cirque de Mafate in Réunion.
