Discover the various Mafate Cirque islets via hiking trails or helicopter and experience the local way of life
Composed of 9 isolated hamlets, accessible only on foot via hiking trails or by helicopter. These hamlets, true mountain villages, reflect a self-sufficient and preserved way of life shaped by the history and geography of the cirque.
The main trails leading to the hamlets include the Maïdo trail, the Sans-Souci trail, and the Col des Bœufs trail. Each offers spectacular views of steep cliffs, deep ravines, and lush vegetation. Hikes vary in duration and difficulty, ranging from a few hours for the shortest to full-day excursions for the longest routes.
For those who wish to explore the cirque more quickly or enjoy exceptional viewpoints, helicopter access is available to certain hamlets such as Marla, Roche Plate, or Ilet à Malheur. These flights offer a chance to admire the spectacular geography of the cirque while reaching isolated communities.
Once there, visitors discover villages where time seems to have stood still, with traditional houses, terraced fields, and paths linking the different hamlets. Daily life is still strongly influenced by the history of maroon communities and geographic isolation, giving these hamlets a unique cultural identity.
To fully enjoy the visit, it is recommended to bring appropriate equipment: good hiking shoes, water, sun protection, and to stay on marked trails. Visitors should also respect the inhabitants and the environment in order to preserve the authenticity and beauty of the Mafate Cirque.
