Un îlet chargé en histoire lié au marronnage.
Îlet à Bourse is an îlet in the Cirque de Mafate located at approximately 870 meters above sea level. Less known than La Nouvelle or Marla, it remains a place full of history, offering an authentic experience in the heart of Réunion Island.
Its name originates from the island's marronage history. It is said that a reward (or “bourse”) was offered to hunters of runaway slaves to capture the maroon leader Mafate. This anecdote gives the îlet a strong historical dimension, recalling significant episodes of colonization and resistance in the island’s highlands.
The recent history of Îlet à Bourse is also marked by climatic events. After the 1948 cyclone, the îlet was completely abandoned by its inhabitants. It was only from 1969, with the implementation of irrigation works, that the site was gradually repopulated, allowing the return of agricultural activity and local life.
A school was built in 1979, reflecting the desire to maintain family life and sustainability in this isolated environment. As in other îlets of the cirque, these facilities play a key role in daily organization and knowledge transmission.
Îlet à Bourse has a rare feature in the Cirque de Mafate: it is the only îlet from which the sea can be seen. In clear weather, this exceptional view of the ocean provides a striking contrast with the mountainous reliefs of the cirque, creating unique landscapes on Réunion Island.
The natural environment is typical of Mafate’s intermediate zones, with vegetation mixing tropical forests, cultivated areas, and steep slopes. The trails crossing the îlet allow visitors to discover a preserved nature, far from the busiest tourist flows.
Îlet à Bourse is accessible only on foot, via the various hiking trails of the cirque. It is an interesting stop for walkers wishing to explore less frequented areas while enjoying original viewpoints and a more intimate atmosphere than in the main îlets.
From Îlet à Bourse, several routes allow access to other sectors of the cirque:
Local life remains simple and authentic. Inhabitants maintain activities linked to agriculture and self-sufficiency, respecting the cirque’s exceptional environment, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This organization helps preserve a delicate balance between human presence and nature.
In summary, Îlet à Bourse is a discreet but historically rich place, offering a different perspective on the Cirque de Mafate. Between marronage heritage, recovery after the 1948 cyclone, and a unique ocean view, this îlet is well worth exploring during a stay on Réunion Island.
