Un îlet composé de quatre zones principales
Grand Place is one of the largest and most structured areas in the Cirque de Mafate, located at around 650 meters above sea level. Unlike other more compact îlets, Grand Place stands out for its organization into several residential zones spread across a vast territory with varied terrain.
The îlet is composed of four main areas: Grand-Place-les-Bas, Cayenne, Grand-Place-École, and Grand-Place-les-Hauts. This layout reflects the adaptation of the inhabitants to the terrain and the isolation typical of Mafate. Each sector has its own identity and contributes to the overall life of this unique territory.
Situated in a lower part of the cirque, Grand Place benefits from an environment shaped by the proximity of the Rivière des Galets and its tributaries. The landscapes feature deep ravines, steep slopes, and areas of lush vegetation, offering a different atmosphere compared to higher-altitude îlets such as Marla or La Nouvelle.
The history of Grand Place is particularly rich. In 1923, a school was built, becoming the first school in the Cirque de Mafate at the time. This facility marked an important step in the development of local life and the organization of the isolated communities of the cirque.
Religious heritage also holds an important place. The Notre-Dame de Lourdes Church, rebuilt and inaugurated on September 18, 1970, reflects the residents' attachment to their traditions and community life. It remains a central place for the inhabitants of Grand Place today.
Among the notable landmarks in the area is the famous Cayenne bell, inscribed with “Jesus, Maria, Joseph”. Made of bronze and iron, it is believed to date back to 1745. This rare historical object highlights the long history of human occupation in this remote part of the island and is an important heritage element of the cirque.
Grand Place is now a lively community within Mafate. Residents maintain traditional activities such as farming, livestock raising, and tending to subsistence crops. This organization helps preserve a degree of autonomy, essential in a territory accessible only on foot or by helicopter.
For hikers, Grand Place is an interesting stop, less frequented than other îlets but equally rich in discoveries. Its location allows access to several other sectors of the cirque, including Îlet des Lataniers, Îlet des Orangers, and the more remote areas of Mafate. The trails crossing Grand Place offer full immersion in a pristine natural environment.
From Grand Place, several routes allow access to other sectors of the cirque:
The natural environment of Grand Place is remarkable for its diversity. Between tropical forests, steep cliffs, and views over the ravines, the landscapes change along the trails. This richness makes it a favorite spot for hiking, photography, and wild nature enthusiasts.
In summary, Grand Place is more than just an îlet: it is a collection of hamlets that reflect the history, resilience, and organization of the inhabitants of the Cirque de Mafate. Between historical heritage, local life, and pristine environment, this sector offers an authentic and comprehensive view of Mafate in La Réunion.
